First Blog of 2026!

Kia Ora e te Whānau

What a summer we have had! While the weather over Christmas was not very summery, it is sure putting on a show now. The days are hot and the tamariki are having a blast, lapping it all up.

This week, we had our first big session of Tiaki Taiao(previously named Enviroschools) where the Tiaki Taiao Leaders introduced their Rōpū to the tracking tunnels we are going to have around our kura. It was a great afternoon full of awesome learning. A massive well done to our Tiaki Taiao learners for running an awesome session.

Week 4 – Poutini and Waitaikii Pūrākau

Kia Ora e te Whānau

This week, tamariki finished their Poutini and Waitaiki pūrākau that we started with Pīwakawaka in Term 2.
As a senior rōpū, we listened to different parts of the pūrākau each week and turned this into our own versions, using a comic book style for this.

Great job, Kererū and Pīwakawaka! You have worked extremely hard, and the results are awesome!
We have some of these in our classes and the School library to check out.

Welcome to Term 3!

Kia Ora e te Whānau

We are right back into the swing of things in the Kererū akomanga, and the tamariki have been busy.
On Wednesday we the chess tournament in Greymouth and all contenders bar one, had never gone before! They had on their brave faces and done really well! Unfortunately I missed it but based on the korero, images and feedback, they were as awesome as I thought they would be!

On Thursday, we had a group of year 5/6’s head to Westland High School to play futsol – Indoor football/soccer.
The tamariki were great rolemodels, showing our school values and showing the best sportsmanship. I am super proud of how they all played, working hard and having fun as they took on other year 7/8 teams from Te Tai Poutini!.

Week 5 – Pickle Ball

Kia Ora e te Whānau

On Monday we were very lucky to have pickleball with Brijun.
The tamariki learnt all about the game, how to play and skills that were help to develop their co-ordination.
Now we have a few keen pickleballers in Kererū who cannot wait for the opportunity to test their newfound skills!

We have a busy few weeks ahead and the tamariki are doing very well to keep up!
We have the Year 6 Westland High School orientation day, a beach safety day AND assembly… the list goes on and on. What awesome opportunities our tamariki are getting.
Come back each Friday and hear more about our last few weeks of Term 4!

Term 4, Week 1!

Kia Ora e te Whānau

Our first Friday back and we were whizzing off to Cass Square for the West Coast Cricket tournament!
After the postponement in Term 1, the tamariki have been waiting patiently for the set date to kick in. We were lucky the rain held off until the end, otherwise it would have been cancelled until 2025! We are counting our lucky stars.

The tamariki were awesome. As always, making Kaniere Kura proud and rolemodelling all of the schools values. Great Rangatiratanga team.
On Monday we may have a sneaky game of cricket in school, with Kaniere Keas vs Kaniere Kiwis as we ran out of time today. Watch the space for that.

Check out the photos below.

9 weeks to go! It sure went quick…

Week 3 – Cross Country!

This week we had junior and senior cross country. Seniors went out to Kokatahi-Kowhitarangi School and raced alongside Ross, Kūmara and Kokatahi School. This was a way to collaborate between schools and it was great to see the tamariki coming together, supporting one another and celebrating the race!
It was wet and muddy, exactly what the tamariki wanted.

The junior cross country was delayed till Thursday and held at Kaniere school. Whānau came and watched as the juniors raced around the cross country track, marshalled by half of the year 6 tamariki while the other half were taking photos at different points of the track.
the year 6’s done a great job and have got some great content, they were fantastic supporters and helped the juniors to make their way around the track.

Photos to come!

Week 2

What a week! It is nice to be settling into our routines once again and giving some structure to our classroom

We had some wonderful tamariki off to the Regional Chess Championships on Thursday. They snagged the top spot for teams and have come back with some gold medals, badges and certificates, kei runga noa atu!(outstanding!)

We have also had a fabulous session of rōpū sports once again. It is great to see the school coming together and having a heap of fun. It is always something to look forward to and a great way to end a Friday.

On Tuesday we had New Zealand Kahurangi Dance crew come in and teach us some new rākau as well as give us some pointers for our haka and poi. It was nice to hear waiata around the kura once again. This has given us the push to get Kapa Haka started… very exciting times ahead!

Kia Ora and Welcome to Term 2!

And we are back! What a wonderful two weeks it was.
From what I have been told, the tamariki were very busy, enjoying their 2 weeks of ‘freedom’. Whether it be, flying to Australia, driving to Christchurch or having 4 sleepovers in a row… they all came back refreshed and ready for another term of new experiences, fun and learning.
The main events that I have been asked to report back on from tamariki were Ngā Tipu Tōtara(cactus) and Rōpū Sports.

The tamariki had the best session yet during Ngā Tipu Tōtara as they were doing strength and team building activities. This involved stretchers, weight sausages and piggy back rides!
Kererū never cease to amaze me with their communication and relationships they have formed as a year group. It was shining during this session and was commented on many times. Proud of you Kererū!

We had our first session of Rōpū Sports for Term 2 and boy was it a success!
The tamariki have a new system for their instructions and rotations for the Rōpū teachers and it has been a lifesaver. Not only this, but they were well organised, prepped and took all of the little factors into consideration when planning.
They ensure the games were accessible for all ages, they were easy to explain and could be played in a time-slot of 10 minutes with great progress.
It is wonderful to see the rōpū leaders growing within their roles and how the rest of the seniors are guiding and supporting the tamariki within their rōpū.

All in all Kererū are living up to their roles of seniors within the school and are doing so proudly and successfully.
What a great start to Term 2, I cannot wait to see where the term goes!

The End of Term 1!

Kia Ora!

What a fantastic term it has been. I feel like the term has flown by! I cannot wait for term 2 to start so we can begin some new and exciting learning.
Enjoy this video of Rūma Kererū throughout term 1. It features a lot of the fantastic activities we have been doing so far this year.

Have a great holiday!

Week 8!

8 weeks down, 3 to go!
The highlight of this week has been Top Team!

On Thursday we were very lucky to have the Top Team Challenge at Kaniere School. We were joined by Kokatahi-Kowhitirangi School for a fun filled morning of 12 activities that challenged us both mentally and physically, encouraging team work and fast thinking.
Kaniere and Kokatahi worked hard on their challenges, they showed amazing whanaungatanga by working as a team and being inclusive of everyone involved!

I myself had a blast with Mrs Fearn, first running sack races and then the burst pipe water activity.
This was great as I was able to have first hand interactions with the teams and I had the chance to see the growth and progress within the groups as well as the support the lovely Kererū captains provided for their teams.

I have attached some photos of the fantastic day we had. I have also thrown in some photos from the ceremony we had, awarding the Seniors their badges for the responsibilities they have taken on!
A very proud moment from myself. Seeing them with all their badges has made me appreciate the effort they go to even more!
